South East Brazil, about four hours driving from the behemoth São Paulo. Like a dream, I staggered over to the mirror and as I was brushing my teeth, I heard tons of chirps, squawks and strange calls. South American Brazilian Birds!! Only half awake, I lazily walked outside. Sure enough, playing with its reflection in my car’s window was a green headed tanager. Two of them! Three of them treating my car like a playground! This was my early morning introduction to the Trilha dos Tucanos lodge located in South East Brazil, fairly close to São Paulo. Birding is king here. Without an ounce of exaggeration, you can literally see up to 20 new species within the first waking moments of the day and many of them are endemic to this area.
