One bird that I am really excited to see on our next excursion to the Atlantic Rainforest in Southeast Brazil, is the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber). I’ve never seen anything like it. In fact, I’ve never seen IT in my life. It’s not my all-time target Lifer but it’s very close. Why? First of all, it’s incredibly beautiful and elegant. I love the long beak and the long wading legs but the neon scarlet color is almost a shock to the eyes. Plus they are usually found in large numbers together so when they fly it’s like a huge red raspberry flapping to its next destination. They aren’t rare but, as far as Brazil is concerned, they are mainly located in a small slice in the Southeastern Atlantic Rainforest located just south of Sao Paulo.
