The Scarlet Ibis is one of the most striking birds in the world, known for its brilliant red plumage and graceful presence. Witnessing this magnificent bird in its natural habitat is a breathtaking experience that draws nature lovers and bird watchers from around the globe. Brazil, with its vast wetlands and rich biodiversity, offers an ideal setting for this unforgettable encounter. Right now, we are proud to announce that we will be running some trips in 2027 to certain special areas that very few birding groups go to or know about. These will be announced soon but this blog entry is meant to whet your birding in Brazil appetite! We will be offering trips for mixed groups as well as All-Female groups so stay tuned. In the mean time, here is some information that we hope you will find interesting and guide you through the essentials of a scarlet ibis journey in Brazil.

Discovering the Scarlet Ibis Birding Adventure

The scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is native to the tropical regions of South America, and Brazil is home to some of the best locations to observe these birds. Their vibrant red feathers are a result of their diet, which is rich in crustaceans and other aquatic creatures. The sight of a flock of scarlet ibises flying in unison or resting on mangrove branches is a spectacle that captures the heart of every visitor. Just imagine the photos you will take and the contrast between that deep cherry-red and tropical green is mesmerizing.

To fully appreciate the scarlet ibis birding adventure, it is important to understand their behavior and habitat. These birds prefer coastal wetlands, estuaries, and mangrove swamps where they can find ample food and nesting sites. Luckily, in Brazil, there are many other rare and endemic birds that inhabit these areas as well. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to see them active, feeding, or preening.

Planning Your Scarlet Ibis Tour in Brazil

We are going to launch two trips for 2027, one mixed group and the other All-female, that will take place at the best time and in one of the most desireable places in the country to see multiple species of incredible birds (and other wildlife). Our guides will be expert Brazilian birdwhisperers that you can reliably count on to show you where all the birds are. They have lived in Brazil all their lives and most are biologists who know the fauna like the back of their hands. Plus, they are fluent in English. Chosing the right season is very important so we can maximize visibility from a safe distance as to not disturb their habitat. Binoculars are a must and bring the longest lens you can handle. Most birding experts to South America will tell you that insect repellent is a must but so are the right clothes. I love to wear light long sleeve shirts and pants for extra protection from bugs.

Guided tours often include boat rides through mangroves and estuaries, providing unique vantage points to observe the scarlet ibis and other wildlife.

Where is the Best Place to See The Scarlet Ibis?

There are several great places to see this iconic bird but we have a special location that is reknown not only for the birds but for its stunning natural beauty. We will announce this birding trip soon!

Tips for Photographing the Scarlet Ibis

Capturing the beauty of the scarlet ibis on camera requires some preparation and patience. Here are some actionable recommendations:

  1. Use a telephoto lens: A lens with at least 300mm focal length allows you to photograph the birds without getting too close.

  2. Shoot during golden hours: Early morning and late afternoon light enhances the vivid red color of the ibis.

  3. Focus on the eyes: Sharp focus on the bird’s eyes brings life to your photos.

  4. Be patient and quiet: Sudden movements or noises can scare the birds away.

  5. Experiment with angles: Try different perspectives, such as eye-level shots or silhouettes against the sky.

Remember, ethical wildlife photography means prioritizing the well-being of the animals over getting the perfect shot.

Supporting Conservation Efforts

The scarlet ibis faces threats from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. By choosing responsible tours and supporting conservation organizations, you contribute to the protection of these magnificent birds and their habitats.

Many local groups in Brazil work tirelessly to preserve wetlands and educate communities about the importance of biodiversity. When you participate in a scarlet ibis journey, consider:

  • Donating to conservation projects.

  • Following guidelines to minimize environmental impact.

  • Spreading awareness about the species and its challenges.

Your involvement helps ensure that future generations can also witness the magic of the scarlet ibis.
