Top Birdwatching Destinations in Brazil

Brazil’s birdwatching hotspots are spread across different regions, each with unique habitats and species. Here are some of the best places to add to your birding itinerary:

Pantanal - The World’s Largest Tropical Wetland

The Pantanal is a vast wetland area in central-west Brazil, famous for its incredible biodiversity. It is one of the best places to see large water birds, raptors, and colorful species like the hyacinth macaw. The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to visit because animals gather around shrinking water sources, making them easier to spot.

  • Key species: Jabiru stork, toucans, herons, and the rare hyacinth macaw.

The Hyacinth Macaw is endangered but great efforts are being made to preserve its habitat.

Amazon Rainforest - The Birdwatcher’s Dream

The Amazon basin covers a huge part of northern Brazil and is the most biodiverse rainforest in the world. Birdwatchers can find thousands of species here, including many colorful parrots, toucans, and elusive antbirds. The dense forest and river systems provide endless opportunities for exploration.

  • Key species: Harpy eagle, Amazonian motmot, and various species of parrots.

  • Best time to visit: June to December, during the dry season.

Essential Tips for Successful Birdwatching in Brazil

Birdwatching in Brazil can be a thrilling experience, but preparation is key. Here are some practical tips to make the most of your birding adventure:

  1. Bring the right gear: A good pair of binoculars, a field guide specific to Brazilian birds, and a camera with a zoom lens are essential.

  2. Dress appropriately: Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors helps you blend into the environment.

  3. Start early: Birds are most active in the early morning hours.

  4. Hire local guides: Besides our regular Bi-lingual guide, we hire a local guide to ensure your birding or birdwatching sucess.

  5. Be patient and quiet: Birds can be shy, so move slowly and avoid loud noises.

Atlantic Rainforest- Possibly the most diverse place to birdwatch in the world

The Atlantic Forest, or Mata Atlântica, stretches along Brazil’s eastern coast. It is a biodiversity hotspot with many endemic species. Although much of the forest has been lost, protected areas in Rural Sao Paulo offer excellent birdwatching opportunities.

  • Key species: Red-billed curassow, black-fronted piping guan, Royal Flycatcher and the colorful manakins.

  • Best time to visit: March to October.

  • Tips: Visit during the breeding season to see spectacular courtship displays.

Cerrado and Caatinga- Come see the rarest of birds

Beyond the famous rainforests and wetlands, Brazil’s Cerrado and Caatinga regions offer unique birding experiences. The Cerrado is a vast tropical savanna with many endemic species, while the Caatinga is a dry shrubland home to birds adapted to arid conditions.

  • Cerrado key species: Greater rhea, red-legged seriema, and the hyacinth macaw.

  • Caatinga key species: Caatinga cacholote, white-browed guan, and the endemic Lear’s macaw.

  • Best time to visit: Dry season from May to September.

Although similar to the Hyacinth Macaw, the Lear's Macaw was almost extinct less than ten years ago.
We are very lucky to still have the Lear's Macaw which is hanging by a thread. Great efforts have been made to save this species.
